Week 3

We have reached the half way stage of the half term and time seems to be flying! The children have as always been working hard and have still been talking about the trip to the Tower of London! There were lots of things happening this week, notably the year 6 sports hall athletics competition and also St Patrick's Day. Never a dull moment!

In English, inspired by the trip, the children wrote some descriptive passages about the metal dragon that was on display. It was great to see a range of descriptive features, particularly the children's vocabulary choices. Continuing with the theme of description in shared reading the children looked at a descriptive piece of writing called, The Wildflower. The children had the chance to visualise what they heard and then pick out key descriptive features.

In maths we turned our focus back to fractions for Year 5s and Reasoning from Known facts for Year 6s.

In geography we started our new unit – A local Study. We started by thinking about where we lived in Leamington Spa – could we find our road on a street map? Then we located Leamington Spa in the UK and the UK in the World. We had great fun using Google Earth to zoom in and out of our location.

In DT the children worked in groups to follow a recipe to make a healthy muffin with a range of different flavours. The children then did a taste evaluation and many were surprised by how nice the avocado muffin tasted!

Thursday was St Patrick's Day and as part of celebrating this the children got to look at Celtic knots and understand their significance. The children then drew their own (see pictures below).

In ICT we began our new unit on coding and the children made a SCRATCH account so that they could save their projects.

Wishing you all a lovely weekend,

Mrs Williams
