Week 3

Happy weekend everyone.  I can't believe it is now the end of Week Three.  Time is going so quickly-helped I think by the lovely sunny weather we are having.

The children have continued making us proud. They are loving school life and enjoying the 'novelty' of new firsts-the first Celebration Assembly in the hall with the rest of year 5/6. Playing on the field with their friends and eating together in the hall.  They have a very enthusiastic and cheerful attitude to their work and it has been a joy to see their books slowly filling with work. The quality of writing is fantastic.

We were super proud to hear Eliza and Adam chosen as House Captains and have also have been listening to various members of the class present their ideas for the school council in the hope of being elected as our class school councillor. The class are so supportive and thoughtful towards  each other and it really is lovely to see.

This week we have started our book which we will now be studying for the majority of the Autumn term, Street Child. We made predictions as to what we thought the book would be about based on the title, front cover and the prologue. We then read the first few chapters and were introduced to a range of characters and settings before starting to learn about the Victorian workhouses. Gosh, what an awful life.  Poor little Jim(Street Child)has had to endure so much already and we are only on Chapter 5... We are hoping he is going to find some St Paul's spirit and begin turning his life around.  In shared reading we have been watching the short film, The Lighthouse. The children have been considering a characters feelings and then sequencing the events in the film. In maths the children have moved into their different groups(another first!). We have been working on the four operations this week and it has been good to see how confident the children are with the appropriate methods (and also how neatly their work is presented). In geography we continued our study of trade and economics by looking at what and to whom the UK imports and exports.  In science we looked at how light travels and then conducted an experiment to prove the theory. In RE we have been studying the idea of cosmology and evolution and how they can link to the Christian idea of creation. Finally in PE we have continued our playground athletics theme (this time on the actual playground) with the children doing the standing long jump and the javelin.

I think they are due a well deserved rest!  have a lovely weekend, enjoy the sunshine and we look forward to seeing them all on Monday morning.
