Week ending 6.01.23
"Our World; Our Continents and Oceans" Topic Entry Day
Today some of our children took their first flight courtesy of St Paul's Airline flown by Mrs Newell. There was no need to worry as all in flight safety procedures were explained and adhered to. The children then flew all around the world.
They went to Brazil in South America and made carnival hats.
They went to India in Asia and learnt some Indian dancing.
They flew to Sierra Leone in Africa and learnt about our partner school, St Charles Lwanga in Bo, and heard a story read by Usifu Jalloh.
They flew to Norway and created chalk pictures of the Northern Lights.
On their return to Leamington, we hope they slept well and recover well from any jet lag ready for Monday. It was a great day!
English
In English, we started the lesson by recapping the alphabet. We then arranged ourselves into alphabetical order (by first name). We then listened to some audio and guessed what animal we could hear. We drew our animals on sugar paper and used oil pastels. The majority of us correctly guessed that the animal was a whale. We then watched a video clip which shared some fun facts about whales.
For the following lesson, we worked in table groups to add speech to the animals on the front cover of an unknown book. We enjoyed using our imagination!
Maths
We carried out subtraction using a number line, by rolling a dice and taking that number away from 10. We recognised that we start on the number which is first in the number sentence. The second number in the number sentence tells us how many jumps we need to work out the answer. For our challenge, we matched the jigsaw pieces to match the correct number sentence to the number line.
DT
Half of the class finished the cooking unit. We practiced our cutting skills and how to hold a knife correctly. We chopped some vegetables and mixed ingredients together to create a variety of dips. We then tasted and evaluated these dips by describing the appearance, taste and smell. The dips we tasted were long island, guacamole, salsa, hummus and raita.
For our new unit, we created a sliding mechanism. We used a pencil to make a small hole on the dotted line. We then were able to insert our scissors into the hole to cut along the straight line on the background image. We then carefully cut around the minibeast pictures and inserted these into the slots. This allowed the minibeast picture to move horizontally or vertically, to create a moving picture.
