Week 5

We have reached the end of the penultimate week of the term and like the weather it has been a varied and fun time in 5/6B! In Monday's assembly Mr Hawkins challenged the children to show resilience whilst at school and 5/6B definitely rose to the challenge.

In English the children have been continuing to plan and write their stories based on The Water Tower. The children have really been engaged with the scary story and seeing them develop their ideas has been great. We have asked the children to focus on their use of vocabulary and sentence structure to build tension in their work. We have also challenged the children to edit their work looking out specifically for areas they know they can make mistakes in. This week instead of shared reading we have been listening to the children read their own books to us. It is always great to hear children read and see what books they have. We would strongly encourage children to be given this opportunity at home. In maths we have continued our work on fractions, decimals and percentages. This week the main focus has been on percentages with children converting percentages to fractions and decimals and also looking at more reasoning style questions. In geography this week the children were looking at ordnance survey and sketch maps. The children enjoyed looking at different examples and we will be aiming for the children to draw their own sketch maps of the local area. In ICT the children have been working on their coding skills using the computer programme Scratch. There have been some fantastic skills on display! In DT after lasts week successful bake the children have been designing their own healthy muffins. We are convinced we may have a future Bake Off star in the class. In RE this week we had a visitor, Evan. Evan came in to speak to the children about what Christians believe and also answered lots of amazing questions from the children. Finally, in PE the children have continued learning more about street dance.

This weeks song choice comes from a favourite of Mr Hawkins, Foo Fighters. With the sad and untimely passing of their drummer the song My Hero seemed a fitting tribute.

Thanks,
