Week 5
We have been inundated with visitors this week. On Monday afternoon Owen Powell spoke to the children about his work as a cartographer. He showed various maps that he has worked on, even showing a map related to The Beatles! On Tuesday the children were then joined by Katie Mobeb. Katie is a sport psychologist who has worked with a variety of teams and sports people. She spoke to the children about her work as a psychologist and specifically about the book that she wrote in partnership with Marcus Rashford. It was a brilliant talk and the children were fascinated by what they learnt.
In class we have also kept up our hard work with the children enjoying their learning this week.
English - In English this week the children have been very busy! We started a new activity which we will now be doing three times a week. The children are given dictated sentences which contain various grammar and punctuation rules. The aim is for children to write them down correctly and to encourage them to think about the rules they need to remember when writing. The children finished off their stories based on The Wolves in the Walls and they were fantastic. A brilliant mixture of figurative language and dialogue. Finally, we started our final text of the term, The Arrival. This graphic novel is interesting in that it doesn't have any words. The children had the opportunity to explore some of the pictures and begin to come up with their own predictions for what was going on (spoiler, there are no wrong answers).
Maths - This week year 5 have been taught by myself and Mrs Young and we have been looking at fractions. As part of our learning we met Nigel the Numerator and Darren the Denominator and also looked at fractions through the medium of cheese on toast. Ask the kids to explain. Year 6 were taught by Mrs Wellicome and were consolidating their learning of the four operations, particularly how our known number facts can support division.
Afternoon subjects - Geography this week was taken over by the visit of Owen Powell and it was fantastic for the children to see how their learning relates to the work of a cartographer. In protective behaviours the year 6 children looked at various scenarios and what safe choices could be made in them. In science the children planned an experiment (and also were taught by Mrs Newell). In PE they continued to develop their handball skills, ably taught by Mr Challis. The children also enjoyed their learning in RE with some active discussions taking place. The children's sewing projects are also coming along nicely.
Values Award - This week Josh received the values award, we have been very impressed with his work, especially in English.
Head Teacher's Award - Juliana received the head teacher's award for just being her fantastic and lovely self!
